Key Terms: Economic Diversification in Oil-Exporting Arab States

Before starting research on policy and solutions within the wide scope of economic diversification, it is important to be familiar with a few key terms. This list is not exhaustive, but it is a good place to start with your research for Topic B. Middle East-North Africa (MENA): MENA encompasses countries within the Middle East and North Africa. In the scope of oil trade and economic diversification, they are very economically diverse. Therefore, when considering the issue at hand, it is important not to propose blanket solutions. Instead, try to tailor to specific needs, or make your changes flexible according to circumstance.  Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC): An intergovernmental organization of 13 oil-exporting states, OPEC works to coordinate petroleum policies among its Member-States. In 1968, it issued a Declaratory Statement of Petroleum Policy that, as expressed by the United Nations, gives all countries permanent sovereignty over their natural resourc...

A Note on the Topics

Hi all! This is Lauren, your Head Chair for BMUN LXX! Committee time is drawing near, and I am so excited to meet all of you. Before we begin, I would first like to reiterate why we chose these topics and what we hope you, as delegates, walk away with. Reconstructing the Gaza Strip The Israel-Palestine conflict is something that feels familiar, but often remains abstract to many high school students. It is not unheard of, but it often does not receive the length of time necessary in history curricula. In order to make this topic more digestible to delegates, we have narrowed it down to the Gaza Strip and the ways in which historical violence continues to breed animosity and suffering. While this committee will be primarily focusing on humanitarian aid, it is also very important to understand how we ended up where we are now.  Economic Diversification in Oil-Exporting Arab States The mere length of the title "Economic Diversification in Oil-Exporting Arab States" may sound i...

Key Terms: Reconstructing the Gaza Strip

Before starting research on policy and solutions within the wide scope of reconstruction, it is important to be familiar with a few key terms. This list is not exhaustive, but it is a good place to start with your research for Topic A. Balfour Declaration: In the wake of World War I, the British Empire took control over Palestine which was previously part of the Ottoman Empire. On November 2, 1917, the Balfour Declaration was a public pledge that the British Empire made to the Jewish people residing in Palestine, promising for the eventual establishment of a Jewish state.  The British Mandate in 1922: The British Mandate was established by the League of Nations after World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The British were granted control to rule over the territory, and they held official accountability for and responsibility over the territory of Palestine.  Partition Plan of 1947: Also known as United Nations Resolution 181, this resolution called for the parti...

Hi everyone! My name is Incia Haider and I will be serving as one of the vice-chairs in the Arab League committee for BMUN's 70th conference! I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student at Berkeley majoring in both Global Studies and Political Economy. Within the Global Studies major, my focus is on peace and conflict in the Middle East/North Africa region, and my Political Economy concentration is on global development and inequality. Aside from participating in BMUN, I am a Peer Advisor for the Political Economy major and am also writing my senior thesis this year on sectarianism in Pakistan.  In my free time, I love reading, exercising, and watching a good Pakistani drama. I hope all of you have a beneficial time researching and learning more about the situation in Gaza and economic diversification of oil-exporting countries in the MENA region. These topics are incredibly important and I believe all of you will do amazing in explaining your stances and debating with each ...

Hi everyone! Welcome to Arab League 70! My name is Darren Lee, and I'm excited to be your vice-chair for this upcoming conference this March. As of right now, I am a freshman at Berkeley studying Political Economy. I was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up there for eight years before immigrating to Jakarta, Indonesia, which I now call home. I'm a big fan of Formula 1, a competitive swimmer, a major advocate of good Phở and an avid traveler of going to San Francisco at unnatural AM hours.  Joining MUN in high school was one of the best decisions of my life, I got the chance to not only travel Indonesia but also travel across Asia too. Besides getting to travel, it gave me a place to meet new friends and most importantly develop new, valuable academic skills. Skills like being able to speak in front of hundreds of people, write up speeches in seconds, and research policies up to a big, thick binder level. All skills that I am confident all of you will develop during ou...
